We have supported our members by posting and updating comprehensive links to specialist society, national and international guidelines on delivering clinical care in the context of the pandemic. These also included child and family information resources regarding the effects of COVID-19 on children and younger people with gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders.
Although COVID-19 interrupted both CAPGAN’s usual programme of 2 yearly in-person meetings (originally joint meeting with KPA in Mombasa planned for May 2022) and also other planned activities (e.g. VF Scheme), we have managed to remain active on-line.

PROFESSOR TONY NELSON
Clinical Professional Consultant
and Professor of Practice in Paediatrics,
Faculty of Medicine,
Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The theme for the 2022 CCSPF was “Commercial determinants of health: evidence, tools, dialogue and advocacy”. It was recognized that commercial entities can have a significant impact of young people’s nutrition. Tony reminded participants of the four recommendations to Commonwealth governments from the 2022 CCPSF which were:
1.Gather better evidence on how commercial determinants impact health.
2.Develop regulatory tools that minimize opportunities for commercial entities to influence policy development.
3.Convene partnerships with civil society to implement strategies what minimize negative impacts and highlight health promoting commercial practices.
4.Raise awareness of the impacts of the commercial determinants of health and establish independent monitoring and reporting mechanisms.
Tony said that while Commonwealth governments have a responsibility to limit the negative aspects of the commercial determinants of health and encourage the positive aspects it is not easy for them to find a way to reconcile commercial advertising with public health messages.
Recognise that John Walker Smith has retired from CAPGAN. Founding member and invaluable role in Leadership and support for CAPGAN over many years. His legacy will be maintained through the JWS Oration – included in this meetings programme
